Bike Across Italy with Experience Plus ! Venice to PisaTour Duration :
12 Days Day 1:Arrive this afternoon at our hotel on the Lido of Venice, where we'll fit bikes. Then, take a quick trip into Venice for a look around (our hotel is just 10 minutes by vaporetto from Piazza San Marco) or relax on the beach at the hotel cabana. We'll have a welcome dinner at a small trattoria in Venice this evening. Day 2: We leave Venice today and head south along the Lido. The Lidos of Venice and Pellestrina protect the Venetian lagoon from the Adriatic Sea and are home to numerous small fishing villages. As we pedal our way down the coast, we'll take two ferries on our way to Chioggia, at the south end of the lagoon. Enjoy lunch on your own there before continuing south to the Po Delta. Dinner together this evening. Mileage: 58 km (36 miles). Day 3:
We stop in Comacchio this morning for a visit of the town by boat - similar to a Venetian gondola! After our ride, we pedal through a protected reserve along the River Reno. We stop nearby for lunch at a local farmhouse. Then it's on to Ravenna, where we'll have plenty of time to visit Dante's tomb and the famous mosaics in the churches of San Vitale, Sant' Apollinare Nuovo and in the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia. Dinner together. Mileage: 55 km (34 miles). Day 5: We'll stop at the church of Sant'Apolli-nare in Classe for a chance to see some of the oldest mosaics in all of Italy. Then it's off to the farm for a tour of the peach orchard and vineyards. Paola's family has cultivated this land for more than 100 years! From there, we'll pedal on to Faenza, where you can visit some of the town's world famous ceramics shops this afternoon. We have dinner together. Mileage: 54 km (34 miles). Day 6: We head into the Apennines today, and you'll have a choice between relaxing, riding, or relaxing some and then riding. Those wanting a day off the bikes can spend a leisurely morning shopping in Faenza before catching the train to tonight's destination in Ronta. Others will want to pedal the whole route over the Apennines. Whichever you choose, this is a great day! Dinner together this evening. Mileage: 0-68 km (0-42 miles). Day 7: There's a small climb this morning to Vetta le Croci, then we glide downhill to the old Etruscan city of Fiesole, where we'll enjoy a great view of Florence rising from the valley floor. We'll ride into town together, but the rest of the afternoon is yours to explore this capital of Renaissance Italy. Our hotel in Florence is on the banks of the Arno River, near the Uffizi Gallery. Mileage: 42 km (26 miles). Day 8: This is a rest day in Florence, so take it easy and enjoy this fabulous Renaissance city! Visit the Uffizi Gallery; tour the Academia (home to Michelangelo's David); and sip espresso in a local cafe! At sunset this evening, take a stroll down to the Ponte Vecchio to engage in the favorite local pastime, people watching. Dinner on your own this evening.
After breakfast, we head out of Florence and down the Arno River valley this morning. We'll climb a bit as we cross Mount Albano (remember the van is available if you want) but what a spectacular view! Our destination today is Vinci, the birthplace of Leonardo da Vinci, where you'll have a chance to visit the house where he was born and a museum with scale models of his inventions. Dinner together this evening. Mileage: 45 km (28 miles). Day 10: You will want to visit the Medici villa in Cerreto Guidi today as we continue west to Lucca, where we'll stay the next two nights. Lucca was a Roman town and one of Medieval Italy's most prosperous city-states. Today, Lucca retains its medieval charm with its small shops and cafes, as well as the beautiful 17th-century wall that surrounds the town. Dinner on your own. Mileage:- 60 km (37 miles). Day 11: We leave mid-morning for a ride to Pisa to see the leaning tower in the Piazza dei Miracles. Pisa is a university town and its square (the only one in Italy with lush green grass!) serves as the campus. Enjoy lunch or a picnic in the square before we pedal back to Lucca. You'll have time this afternoon to continue exploring Lucca's fascinating medieval streets! We'll celebrate with a final dinner together this evening. Mileage: 52 km (33 miles). Day 12: After breakfast, our journey across Italy comes to an end. You're on your own now, prepared to face Rome and all those museums or to explore the Lake District to the north. Or maybe you'd like to explore the Cinque Terre and one of our walking tours there. Buon viaggio! Total Mileage: 427-487 km (266-302 miles).
