Bicycling Venice & Dolomites TourTour Duration :
11 Days Day 1:
We meet at our hotel on the Lido of Venice today and fit bikes this afternoon. Then, you're free to explore this romantic city. (We suggest arriving in Venice a few days early if you haven't been here before.) This evening, we'll enjoy a special dinner together in a tucked-away trattoria in the heart of Venice. Day 2: After a leisurely breakfast this morning, we'll catch the ferry north to the Lido di Cavallino. From there, we'll ride by lush Venetian vegetable gardens on our way to Lido di Jesolo. This afternoon we ride along the Piave River to our night's stay in San Dona' di Piave. Dinner together. Distance: 52 km (33 miles), with an optional 30 km (19 mile) round trip to Caorle. Day 3: Our route today takes us just south of Treviso through agricultural country settled by the Romans. Along the way, we'll pedal by the Castle of Roncade, with its elegant 16th-century Villa Giustinian. Our goal is Castelfranco Veneto, where our hotel overlooks the main square of this 13th-century walled town. Distance: 73 km (46 miles). Day 4: We stop first thing this morning to visit a bicycle-jersey factory and its great selection of jerseys and other cycling gear. Then, it's on to Villa Barbaro, Andrea Palladio's architectural masterpiece, and the scenic road leading to Valdobbiadene, home of prosecco, one of Italy's finest sparkling wines. We spend the evening in Valdobbiadene, where we'll have a wine tasting before going to dinner together. Distance: 42 km (26 miles). Day 5: We are in the in the foothills of the Dolomites now, and we'll enjoy a spectacular ride through farmlands and villages to Belluno. On the way, you'll want to visit the wonderful bicycle museum that just opened up in one of the small towns on our route. We'll suggest some places for dinner on your own this evening. Distance: 68 km (43 miles). Day 6: We jump onto the train with our bicycles this morning for a quick shuttle into the Dolomites. We'll pedal the last 36 kilometers to Cortina along parts of an old railroad grade that is now a bike path. We recommend lunch in town or a ride up the cable car for a picnic in the mountains before heading back to town and our hotel in the heart of Cortina. Distance: 36 km Day 7: We climb over Passo Falzarego this morning. Along the way, we recommend a stop in Pocol for a rest and great photo opportunity. You'll be at the top of the pass for lunch, where you can enjoy a beautiful cable car ride to the top of the mountain and a picnic. From the pass, it's mostly downhill to our hotel, where we'll enjoy dinner together this evening. Distance: 35-47 km
We'll offer a morning hike for those who wish. Or, if you prefer, you can take the cable car up the mountain late morning, and enjoy a traditional Dolomite meal together at a mountain hut. After lunch, take a nap, a hike, or go back to our hotel and take in the spectacular terrace view. Dinner together. Day 9: This morning you can take a hike from the hotel or, since this is a bike tour, we'll recommend pedaling the classic tour of the Sella Massif on the Dolomite High Road. This 67 km loop features 6,500 feet of climbing over 4 famous passes (Campolongo, Pordoi, Sella, and Gardena). The support van will assist you, so you can always ride part way home if you choose. Dinner together. Distance: up to 67 km (42 miles). Day 10: We head downhill to San Lorenzo and Brunico this morning. Enjoy exploring Brunico for lunch and then we'll pedal on to Valdaora, where our tour ends in a small Alpine village that overlooks the Austrian Alps to the north. We'll have a great final dinner together this evening. Distance: 40 km (25 miles). Day 11: After breakfast together, we'll say good-bye to our Dolomites' cycling adventure. Trains head north to Austria and Munich or south to Milan, Rome, and Venice. Or, stay in the Dolomites and spend a few days hiking. Total Distance: 418-460 km (261-288 miles), depending on optional rides.
