Celebrate Italy's Carnevale with ExperiencePlus!
Tour Duration : 11 Days Day 1:
Meet today at our hotel in Verona, setting for Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet. For those who arrive early, we've planned a short guided walk of central Verona including the famous Roman Arena, Juliet's balcony, the vegetable market in 'Piazza delle Erbe,' and along the river to the Castle and the old bridge of the Scaligero family. This evening we'll meet for a glass of wine and introductions before going to dinner together. Day 2: We take a short drive this morning to Lake Garda where we'll enjoy a walk along the shore to the 9th and 10th-century fortified villages of Bardolino and Lazise. Both were ports on Lake Garda at a time when Medieval trade from Venice, Verona and Padova was just beginning. We have lunch together here and head back to Verona this afternoon. Take time for further exploring in Verona before dinner on your own this evening. Day 3: After breakfast in our hotel we'll shuttle to nearby Vicenza for a visit to Palladio's famous theater, symbol of an architectural style that dominated Venice and the Veneto from the late 16th Century onward. After lunch on your own in Vicenza we'll head on to Venice, where we'll plan a walk through the medieval streets to our hotel in the heart of the city! (We'll plan to attend a Vivaldi concert in a local concert hall this evening, if available.) Dinner together. Day 4: Get out your cameras and join us for a walk in Venice, through the neighborhoods of Cannaregio, the Rialto market (where the Venetians do their grocery shopping) and Venice's original Ghetto district. (The word 'ghetto' derives from the Venetian dialect and this historical district of the city!) We'll also visit some of Venice's lesser-known neighborhoods - great stopping points rarely visited by tourists to the city. You'll have time this afternoon to visit the principal sights, including Saint Mark's Square and Cathedral, the Doge's Palace, and the bell tower of the cathedral. Meanwhile, you'll see locals and tourists dressed in full Carnevale costumes throughout the city. Day 5: Prepare for more Carnevale activities today. Weather permitting, we'll plan a morning excursion to the island of Murano where we'll visit one of the smaller glass factories - one the big tour groups don't know about! Later, we'll offer the option of returning to Venice or of visiting Burano, another of the surrounding islands in the lagoon, famous for its fine embroidered cloth works. This afternoon, wander again with your camera to capture Carnevale revelers or catch up on your rest, we'll try to attend a local Carnevale street event this evening (local neighborhood associations schedule everything from street dances to puppet shows during the Carnevale festivities) Dinner on your own. Day 6: We'll spend the morning in Venice today so take time to visit one last museum or to do some last minute shopping! We'll then catch our shuttle south to the elegant walled city of Ferrara. This evening, we plan to attend a concert at the local opera house, if scheduling allows. Dinner on your own. Day 7: We'll spend the morning exploring Ferrara on foot. Then, enjoy lunch on your own before we shuttle to nearby Cento this afternoon. After checking into our hotel, we'll go out to see Cento prepare for its grandiose Carnevale celebrations on Sunday! This is a small enough town that you can thoroughly get to know it this afternoon. Dinner together this evening. Day 8: After breakfast, we'll head out to view one of Europe's biggest Carnevale parades! Bring your camera, wear your wool socks, and get ready for Carnevale. This parade is so well-known that its best float is selected to represent Italy in the Carnevale celebrations in Rio de Janeiro the following year. Dinner together this evening.
We'll bring out the gourmet food lover in you today! Take a little time this morning to recover from last night's celebrations, then get ready for a visit to our favorite Parmesan cheese maker. We'll follow that up with a tour of one of the area's best balsamic vinegar distillers. Then, since we are in the heart of the world's best pasta region (Emilia-Romagna), we'll enjoy lunch together at one of our favorite restaurants. We'll be in Bologna this afternoon, with ample time to explore this fascinating city. Don't forget the cathedral, San Petronio, and the university district - founded more the 900 years ago! If time and tickets allow, we'll take in another concert this evening! Dinner on your own. Day 10: We'll continue exploring Bologna today. Mid-morning we'll take the famous walk under the porticoes from downtown Bologna to the church of San Luca at the top of the hill overlooking the city. What a view! Back in the city for Mardi Gras celebrations this afternoon, you are free to explore, rest or catch up on your journal writing before our grand, final dinner together this evening. Day 11: Our tour ends this morning, but why not explore a little more of Italy during this off-season for the tourist? Milan is only 3 hours away by train, Rome only 5. Whatever you choose, have a great trip!
