Bike Riders Tours: Cycling and Cucina in Umbria, ItalyTour Duration :
8 Days 
Transfer to Torgiano where we meet for introductions and a warm up ride through Lungarotti's Rubesco vineyards and with views of Assisi off in the distance. We meet back in Torgiano to sample some of Lungarotti's classic reds and whites before dinner at our inn featuring zucchini blossoms stuffed with caprino cheese and roasted guinea fowl. Overnight at Le Tre Vaselle, an elegant 5 star hotel with sauna and pool. Our bike route: 10 miles of flat to gently rolling terrain. Day 2: A flat ride into Deruta where we have an optional tour at a leading maker of fine hand-painted ceramics. Back to Torgiano to sample some of Lungarotti's classic reds & whites (Torre di Giano, Rubesco, Rubesco Riserva)and a picnic lunch. Afterwards, we settle in for two nights in an elaborately restored villa in a walled Roman town. Tonight we dine in our inn's warm dining room lined with fresh flowers and turn of the century ceramics. Dinner includes bruschetta, porchetta & salsiccia on the open grill. Our bike route: 26 miles of generally flat terrain. Day 3: Into Assisi to explore the pink city and the magnificent Basilica of St. Francis on our private walking tour. We bike on a centuries old farm path that leads us through the olive trees into Spello. Afternoon visit with Fabio, a local producer of organic olive oil where we enjoy a lively introduction and tasting of six Umbrian cold-pressed oils and some of Fabio's homemade white wine. Dinner on your own tonight. Our bike route: 25 miles of flat to gently rolling terrain. Optional ride to Collepino. Day 4: Spectacular ride along the ridges and valleys of the Umbrian countryside. We are in the heart of wine country! We visit one of our favorite vineyards for a tastings of Rosso and Sagrantino di Montefalco before we arrive in the mystical city of Spoleto. Our inn, a 4 star 15th century palazzo overlooking the duomo is home for two nights. Tour of the catacombs underneath the hotel. Dinner at Sabatini, including risotto ai quattro formaggi (served from a round of parmesan) and truffle specialties. Informal grappa introduction after dinner. Our bike route: 23 miles of flat to gently rolling terrain. One climb into Montefalco. Day 5: Day 5 is a full day devoted to preparing a classic Umbrian feast. We visit the open air market with our chef, including a visit to a salumeria specializing in goats milk ricotta and pungent truffles supplied by private truffle hunters. Hands-on pasta rolling, grilling, and other menu suggestions from our chef. We celebrate our accomplishments with dinner in our inn's frescoed dining hall. Day 5 is a rest day for exploring the town and cooking lessons with our chef. Optional ride: 18.5 miles.
Our longest ride brings forth truly spectacular views of the green valleys deep within central Umbria. We ride along with our chef as he points out wild thyme, rosemary and oregano growing by the roadside. Two nights in a luxurious 14th c. palace that is now a unique inn with pool, sauna and gym. The estate produces its own wine, honey and olive oil. Our bike route: 37 or 41 miles of gently rolling to rolling terrain. 2 climbs. Day 7: Day 7 has many options: Relax by the pool or walk along the estate where you can pick sweet cherries in the spring or fresh figs & chestnuts in the fall. Ride to an agriturismo to visit the wild boar, or cycle to the old town of Deruta. Our bike route: 15-35 miles on rolling terrain. Day 8: Breakfast at the inn and late morning drop-off at the Perugia train station. Rome or Florence is 2 hrs away by car or train.
