Cycling Umbria: A Pasta Addict's DelightTour Duration : 12 Days
We head southeast today through beautiful and historic landscapes. Mid-morning we cross the Rubicon River three times. Julius Caesar crossed it only once in 49 BC and threw the Roman republic into civil war! Our destination is San Marino, a tiny, independent republic and Europe's oldest state. Mileage: 60 km (37 miles).
We enter The Marches today on our way to Urbino, one of the gems of the early Renaissance. Take your time to enjoy the vineyards and orchards. You'll have time tomorrow to enjoy Urbino. Dinner together. Mileage: 50 km (31 miles), plus more for those who wish! Day 4: We stay in Urbino today so you'll have time to explore the famous Ducal Palace and National Art Museum. Or, we'll organize a ride into the surrounding hills for those who prefer! Mileage on today's optional rides: 50-80 km (31 - 50 miles). Day 5: Today's ride takes us into the heart of the Apennine Mountains to Gubbio in Umbria. A Roman town, Gubbio revived in the 11th Century as a leading medieval city and remains one of Italy's best preserved medieval towns. Tomorrow you can enjoy it fully as we'll stay the day. Dinner together this evening. Mileage: 86 km (53 miles). Day 6: Optional rides, both long and short, give you a chance to get into the hills today while those who prefer can stay in town and explore the ceramic shops, the Roman amphitheater and the narrow medieval streets and architecture. Optional mileage: 40-60 km (25-37 miles). Day 7: We continue south today into the heart of Umbria to Assisi, home of St. Francis. Relax this evening after our ride. You'll have time to explore this fascinating hill town tomorrow. Dinner together. Mileage: 50 km (31 miles).
We suggest a half-day ride today to Deruta, one of Italy's premier ceramics towns. That will leave the remainder of the day to explore Assisi, walk to St. Francis' caves above the town, and just relax while enjoying the magic of this place. Mileage: 52 km (32 miles). Day 9: We pedal to Todi today, a classic hilltop village. Those who want can shuttle to the top of the village, but remember - you've got all day, so take your time and enjoy the Umbrian countryside! Dinner together this evening. Mileage: 55 km (34 miles). Day 10: Those who want to explore by bike today will find a number of ridge-top rides to small villages scattered in the countryside. Those who prefer can stay and explore Todi on foot. Mileage: 54 km (33 miles). Day 11: Our last ride takes us to western Umbria today to the Renaissance town of Orvieto with its famous 14th-century cathedral. We'll enjoy a final dinner together this evening. Mileage: 48 km (30 miles). Day 12: After breakfast together, we'll say our goodbyes until your next tour! Total milage: 349-545 km (217-378 miles).
