The Heart of Italy TourTour Duration :
8 Days Day 1:ROME/SPOLETO transfer. We check-in at a 4 star hotel located in the historic centre of Spoleto for 7 nights. Welcome drinks are served after settling in, followed by welcome dinner and a discussion of our program for the week. Day 2: SPOLETO Morning walking tour of SPOLETO. We start with a walk across the 280-foot high medieval aqueduct and then a progressive discovery of this important Umbrian town with its rich history and variety of artistic and architectural treasures. We visit the Duomo with its famous Fra' Filippo Lippi's fresco, the Roman Villa and the Roman Theatre. Dinner in restaurant in Spoleto
NORCIA - BEVAGNA - MONTEFALCO Morning drive through the narrow winding valley of THE VALNERINA to visit the famous food producing town of NORCIA, birthplace of St. Benedict. As well as butchers in Italy, you will also notice the presence in most towns of a 'Norcineria' - a specialised butcher selling sausages, salami, and prosciutto from this small town in the Valnerina, also famous for cheese and the mountain lentils of Castelluccio. We sample cheeses and explore shops displaying wild boar, truffles and sausages made from truffle eating pigs, a tradition of the town. In the afternoon we travel to BEVAGNA, a small town with a delightful piazza surrounded by Romanesque churches and charming public buildings. Bevagna is a little known treasure house of Roman and medieval antiquity and it has one of the best Romanesque piazzas in Umbria. We visit the remains of Roman baths with original mosaic floors, and an ancient water wheel in the vaults of the old amphitheatre. A short drive takes us from Bevagna to the town of MONTEFALCO, with its ancient houses and a variety of architectural styles ranging from the 13th century. We visit local craft shops, in particular Montefalco's traditional linen shop, still reproducing designs from the middle ages. Dinner is in Montefalco, at restaurant Coccorone, always a favourite among the locals. Day 4: MONTELUCO - TRUFFLE GATHERING Leisurely morning departures for Monteluco, a beautiful hill just above Spoleto, site of ancient hermitages. Here St. Francis founded a convent in the XIII century. We enjoy a spectacular drive to the high hill village of PATRICO, where a professional truffle hunter and his trained dogs will accompany us. We have lunch at the home of the hunter and his family who provide pasta, wine, bruschetta and truffles. Day 5: PERUGIA - TORGIANO - DERUTA Today we visit the ancient Etruscan City of PERUGIA and the capital of the Umbria region. Our itinerary includes the Renaissance Rocca Paolina, built over the medieval streets, which can still be visited today, the Collegio del Cambio, with frescoes by Perugino and the National Gallery of Umbria. In the afternoon we first visit DERUTA, a town famous for its production of ceramics since the Middle Ages and later the medieval town of Torgiano, which houses the Lungarotti Wine Museum, where we see evidence of centuries of cultural exchanges throughout the Mediterranean based on the trade in wine. The museum displays old wine presses as well as antique medical journals, ancient farm equipment, ceramics and etchings. Following up on this experience, we travel to one of Umbria's principal vineyards where we will introduce you to the subtleties of judging tastes and perfumes throughout a range of Umbria's excellent wines.
NARNI - MARMORE WATERFALLS Morning departure to the intimate and unspoilt hill town of Narni. We visit the Duomo, the Palazzo dei Priori and the Palazzo del Podestà, with its collection of thirteenth- century sculptures. A beautiful drive will then take us to the MARMORE WATERFALLS, created by the Romans in 271 BC. Dinner in restaurant in Spoleto. Day 7: SPELLO - ASSISI - FOLIGNO Afternoon departure for ASSISI. First we visit the delightful small town of SPELLO on the way to Assisi and then the internationally renowned Basilica of St. Francis. The frescoes of Assisi are a highlight for any person with a love and interest in art. Other significant sites include the Temple of Minerva, the Duomo, the Basilica of Santa Chiara and the Rocca. Final dinner is in Foligno and a true gourmet experience! Day 8: DEPARTURE DAY Spoleto/Rome transfer for departure.
