La Dolce Vita's Pedal Piedmont Tour
Tour Duration : 8 Days Day 1:
WELCOME TO PIEDMONT After a welcome lunch near Gavi, we’ll set off on our warm-up ride to Varinella, the tiny hilltown one valley away where generations of Bisios have resided. In the 16th century house where Claudio’s grandmother once lived, we’ll be introduced to piemontese wines and have a demonstration of the rustic bottling techniques still in use in the Bisio household. [20 miles] Day 2: A SPIN THROUGH THE LAND OF GAVI & DOLCETTO Our morning ride climbs past pin-striped vineyards of Cortese grapes, which are turned into the area’s most renowned wine, the elegant white Gavi di Gavi. We then roll into the land of Dolcetto di Ovada, where we pass through the quaint wine villages of San Cristoforo, Castelleto d’Orba, and Montaldeo. After lunch, we’ll tour the elegant villa and scenic vineyards of La Scolca, a beautifully situated estate that first made Gavi di Gavi famous. Dinner is at an elegant restaurant in Novi where nobles dined between the wars, and will spotlight such piemontese treats as ravioli in a bowl of wine and fresh porcini mushrooms. [25 miles] Day 3: THE RESURRECTED REDS OF MONFERRATO Today as we transfer to Asti, our bike ride goes through Monferrato, where we’ll visit the rustic Azienda Agricola Rollino Monzeglio. This small family-run estate is working closely with the University of Turin on the revitalization of ancient grape types, which we’ll sample over a tasty picnic lunch. (Don’t miss the truffle-laced cheese!) Once refueled, we’ll bike to Asti, the largest town in Piedmont’s wine country. After a walking tour of its medieval streets and cathedral, we’ll be ready for a memorable wine dinner at Piedmont’s famed four-star restaurant, da Guido, where even the hand-rolled piemontese bread sticks are unforgettable. [30 miles] Day 4: A DAY AT THE RACES: THE PALIO (September tour only) In 1275, Asti was finally able to defeat its long-standing rival, Alba. The victors rubbed it in by running a horse race around the city’s walls. Today this race is reenacted in the Palio, a medieval horserace. From our ticketed seats we’ll watch the thundering race and its colorful preamble, which includes a parade with the podestà and other medieval figures and an energetic banner-waving competition. After the festivities, we’ll head over to the Douja d’Or, an annual wine fair that features over 800 wines from 19 regions of Italy. Dinner on your own in Asti. Day 5: BIKING ASTI TO ALBA Today we transfer from Asti to Alba by bike, riding along the ridge overlooking the Tanaro valley, a route that provides spectacular views of ancient hill towns and valleys blanketed with vines. After lunch, we’ll go by shuttle to Barbaresco, a hilltown surrounded by dense vineyards planted in lovely geometrical designs. In Barbaresco we’ll visit the highly regarded Marchesi di Gresy and his estate La Martinenga another of Piedmont’s breathtaking reds. [25 miles] Day 6: LAND OF HEAVENLY MOSCATO Our morning ride takes us through lovely rolling landscapes that offer sudden glimpses of the distant Alps around every curve. We’ll cycle past verdant groves of hazelnuts, the other main product of Piedmont, and onto a ridge that leads into the zone of moscato, a fizzy, fragrant, and low-alcohol dessert wine. We’ll stop in the town of Mango, home of the Enoteca Regionale, and have a sweet snack and flute of moscato in loco. After the ride, we’ll visit the impressive 15th century castle of Barolo once owned by the family that created Piedmont’s king of red wine, then head off to a tour and tasting at the famous estate of Aldo Conterno. [25 miles]
BIKE LOOP THROUGH BAROLO Today our bike ride winds through Barolo and Dolcetto country, a picturesque landscape punctuated by medieval castles. As we traverse the Langhe hills, we pass through the ancient wine towns of Barolo, Monforte, Rodino, and Serralunga. In the afternoon, we shuttle to the famed Renato Ratti estate, housed in a former Benedictine abbey. After a tour of Ratti’s museum of antique winemaking implements, we’ll taste his new "Super Piedmont" wines, as well as his superior Dolcettos and Barolos. Then we’ll move on to La Morra. Here we can enjoy one of the most spectacular view over the Langhe Hills before our last tasting at the estate of Gianni Voerzio. Our goodbye wine dinner will feature the piemontese foods we’ve come to love, such as handmade ravioli, black truffles, fowl in a delicate wine sauce, and zabaglione with moscato. [30 miles] Day 8: BUON VIAGGIO! A shuttle to the Asti train station and assistance with your travel plans.
