Day
1:
1st Day (3/3 - Mon.) ROME
Arrive Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci Airport where you are met by your Bella
Italia Tours director. Transfer by train to our lovely 3-star-plus hotel.
Then, a walking tour to the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, Piazza Navona
and the Fontana dei Fiumi by Bernini. A welcome-to-Rome dinner is included
tonight, with local specialties.
Day 2:
2nd Day (3/4 - Tue.) ROME
A taxi to the start of our walking tour, during which, we’ll see (among others)
the Arch of Constantine, the Colosseum (entrance incl.), the Roman Forum,
the Campidoglio with its architecture & piazza by Michelangelo, the monument
to king Vittorio Emanuele II,and Trajan's Column.
Day 3:
3rd Day (3/5 – Wed.) ROME
In the morning a taxi to St. Peter’s Basilica where, on this Ash Wednesday,
we may attend an audience with the Pope. Lunch on your own nearby then a nice
stroll to Castel Sant’Angelo which we will visit (entrance incl.); this was
originally the mausoleum built for Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd Century and
then became a fortress for the Pope during times of political unrest.
Day
4:
4th Day (3/6 – Thur.) ROME
This morning, with our very knowledgeable local guide (an American expatriate)
we’ll take a taxi to the Vatican Museums (entr. incl.) for an extensive
visit which includes Raphael’s rooms, Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel and
much more. Then it’s on to St. Peter’s Basilica, where we’ll admire the
Pietà, the Baldacchino by Bernini & more. Dinner Included.
Day 5:
5th Day (3/7- Fri.) ROME
We’ll taxi this morning to Campo dei Fiori an open air market with a lively
bohemian atmosphere, and then a look at the Bocca della Verità (Mouth of Truth),
where medieval tradition had it that the jaws would snap shut over the hands
of those who told lies. On to The Jewish Ghetto, lunch on “my “ street Via
Genovesi in Trastevere , and then a walk up the hill of Gianicolo for fabulous
views of Rome below.
Day 6:
6th Day (3/8-Sat.) ROME
Free day for shopping. Guide will offer a free and optional tour to St. John
in Lateran where the Pope comes to celebrate Mass on certain holidays and
Santuario della Scala Santa where it is alleged that the 28 steps here were
originally at Pontius Pilate’s villa in Jerusalem and that Christ climbed
them the day he was brought before Pilate.
Day
7:
7th Day (3/9-Sun.) ROME
Bus to Basilica di San Paolo Fuori le Mura, second in size only to St.
Peter’s Basilica.. It was built in the 4th Century AD by Constantine over
the site of where St. Paul had been buried. It was then rebuilt and enlarged
about a century later Free afternoon. Tonight a farewell to Rome dinner
with local specialties.
Day 8:
8th Day (3/10-Mon.) YOUR FLIGHT HOME
This morning, transfer by train to Rome's Leonardo da Vinci airport for your
return flight.
