Day
1:
Arrival in Palermo at Hotel La Torre. Orientation program Marcella Croce,
our hostess in Sicily, includes welcome aperitif and dinner at estate
of Marquis Pottino where cooking classes will be held.
Day 2: Talk by Marcella Croce: Introduction to the General Characteristics of Sicilian
Cuisine followed by a slide talk: Sicily:A Mosaic of Cultures: Introduction
to Monreale. Guided orientation walk in Mondello and sampling of street food
on the piazza. Cooking class with Nora Pottino. Evening walk in the historical
part of Palermo with a stop for gelato.
Day 3:
Lunch at Gangivecchio, a famous monastery, now a restaurant run by Wanda
and Giovanna Tornabene, James Beard Award winning cookbook authors. Guided
visit to the historic town mountain of Gangi. Feast of the Holy Spirit in
Gangi.
Day 4: Guided visit to Monreale cathedral and cloister famous for its mosaics. Lunch
in the fishing village of Sferracavallo in a restaurant specializing in fresh
seafood. Slide Talk: 25 Centuries of Sicilian Gastronomy:Foreign Influences
on Sicilian Cuisine and Art. Tasting of Marsala wine and typical Sicilian sweets.
Author of On Persephones Island, Mary Taylor Simeti, has been invited to meet
with the group.
Day 5: Guided visit to one of the local historical food markets in Palermo. This will
include a visit to small cannoli and candle factories in the old town as weel
as to artisans workshops where sieves and chairs are made. Several churches
will be visited on our walking tour. Lunch at the Antica Focaceria S. Francesco
for traditional Palermo street food. Cooking class with Nora Pottino.
Day 6:
Survival Italian language class with Irene Matranga. afternoon free. Cooking
class with Nora Pottino.
Day 7: Guided visit to Segesta Temple, 5th c. B.C., in a beautiful setting. Visit
to a coral workshop in Trapani. Lunch (fish couscous and cassatellas) at the
saltworks near Trapani with guided visit to the salt museum, all housed in a
15th c. windmill. Guided visit to the medieval town of Erice that will feature
a demonstration of the making of the famous almond pastries by Maria Grammatico,
co-author with Mary Taylor Simeti of the book Bitter Almonds. Tea and genovese
pastries at Marias Cafe in Erice. Evening free.
Day 8: Free morning and afternoon. Cooking class and farewell dinner with Nora Pottino
and our hosts.
Day 9: Departure
