Sicilian Tresures: Cooking and Cultural Tour

Arrival at the Hotel La Torre in Mondello. Dinner at the Charleston restaurant overlooking the water in Mondello.

Day 2:
Slide lecture by Marcella Croce: Sicilian Puppets and Carts. Walk to the lighthouse near Mondello with a chance to swim there. Lunch will be on the piazza in Mondello. Cooking class with Nora Pottino at her family estate. Puppet show in Palermo and evening walk thru the historical part of Palermo including Four Corners, Piazza Bellini and Piazza Bologni.

Day 3:
Full day guided excursion with visit to the Zingaro Nature Reserve near Scopello. Included will be visits to the Scopello and San Vito Lo Capo tuna fisheries (tonnaros) and the Uzzo Cave, a Mesolithic Age site. On the way back a short visit to the town of San Vito Lo Capo. Picnic lunch in the reserve. Dinner at seafood restaurantin Mondello.

Day 4:
A vist to the Liceo Meli high school in Palermo where we will meet sicilian students, see their school and have an opportunity to learn about the sicilian system of education. Visit to a ceramics workshop. Light lunch in Mondello. Talk on Mafia:Myth and Reality by Giovanni Matranga. Cooking class with Nora Pottino.

Day 5:
Guided visit with Marcella Croce to artisan who paints traditional sicilian carts in Bagheria near Palermo. A rare opportunity to see a dying art first hand. Guided tour of the museum devoted to Guttuso one of 20th century leading Italian artists. The museum is housed in an 18th c. baroque villa in Bagheria. Lunch in the picturesque harbor of Porticello.

Day 6:
Full day guided tour to the country estate and winery of Regaleali near Caltanisseta with wine tasting and lunch at the winery. Evening free.

Day 7:
Free morning and afternoon. Cooking class and farewell dinner with Nora Pottino and our hosts.

Day 8:
Departure with pleasant memories and recipes worth trying out at home.
