Tour of the Alps (TOTA)Tour Duration :
14 Days Day 1:
We'll assemble at Geneva International Airport, then travel to the mountain resort town of Chamonix, France. The balance of the day is free for you to rest up, organize and assemble your bike. Day 2: Our ride starts out with a relatively mellow double pass crossing, as we pedal out from under the towering bulk of Mt Blanc and into the Rhone River Valley of Switzerland. Our overnight stop will be the village of Sierre. 86 kms. Passes: Col des Montets (1461 m); Col des Forclaz (1527 m) Day 3: - The wide Rhone Valley changes character radically as we continue along its easterly course, getting narrow and climbing upward. We're on our way up and over Furka Pass via an incredible collection of switchbacks. We'll bed down in the village of Realp (shared baths in the hall). 105 kms. Pass: Furka Pass (2431 m) Day 4: A short morning warm-up brings us to Oberalp Pass, with a great downhill and plenty of easy valley cruising to finish out our day. We'll be relaxing in Thusis tonight. 95 kms. Pass: Oberalp Pass (2044 m) Day 5: The last day of leg one takes us up and over Julier Pass, then non-stop downhill to the playground of the rich and famous, St Moritz. 79 kms. Pass: Julier Pass (2284 m). Day 6: Day 6 is a free day in St Moritz. Day 7: Rested up, you're on your way to Italy. After some easy morning warm-up riding we're off to tackle our daily pass, which will take us into the Adige River Valley of northern Italy. We stay inside the walls of the fortified village of Glurns tonight. 86 kms. Pass: Ofenpass (2149 m) Day 8: Well. I guess we fibbed a bit... we have no pass to cross today... starting with some easy valley cruising along the Adige River. Plenty of castles overlook the vineyard filled valley as you work your way to Bolzano. In the afternoon we will tackle some steep (14%) but short climbs to reach our lodge in the high valley of Val de Gardena. 127 kms. Day 9: Our triple pass day through Italy's Dolomites ! This challenging day tackles the renowned passes of Grodner Joch, Campolongo and Falzarego; long spectacular climbs up the switchbacks followed by incredible descents, all packaged up with some of Italy's most beautiful mountain scenery. 70 kms. Passes: Grodner Joch (2137 m); Passo do Campolongo (1875 m); Passo di Falzarego (2117 m).
Day 10 is another free day in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Day 11: - A leisurely day of cycling out of Italy along lakes and rivers, then into the southern edge of Austria. We'll be staying in the town of Lienz, the sister city to Jackson Hole (our homebase). 79 kms. Pass: Cimabanche (1529 m). Day 12: The big one, Hochtor Pass... our tallest and probably most challenging climb takes us up to 8260 feet to a small tunnel hewn through the knife ridge. Fortunately long climbs mean long descents and this is no exception. You'll finish up on the shores of Zell am See. 91 kms. Passes: Iselberg Pass (1204 m); Hochtor (2505 m) Day 13: An early morning departure will take you by bus to Munich's airport for your flights home.
