A Little Tour in Tuscany, Bicycling Italy with Experience Plus !Tour Duration : 8 Days
We leave late-morning for our ride west to Vinci. We'll pedal out of town together, and then you can ride at your own pace. In Vinci, you'll want to visit Leonardo's museum to see the replica of his 16th-century bicycle (only 300 years ahead of his time)! Some of you may also want to do the 4 o'clock ride up the side of Monte Albano, described by some of our customers as the most beautiful ride they've ever taken. Dinner together tonight. Mileage: 45 km (28 miles), plus 22 km (14 miles) on the 4 o'clock ride. Day 3: Our first stop today is Cerreto Guidi, where you can visit the 16th-century Medici villa. Then we continue on to the hill top town of San Miniato before exploring the hills near San Gimignano. Enjoy a picnic near Montaione with a view of the Chianti hills in the distance. We enjoy dinner together in the fascinating medieval village of San Gimignano this evening. Mileage: 62 km (39 miles). Day 4: This is your day to relax in San Gimignano or to get away into the hills for a day on your own. Our van will support a ride to Certaldo for those who want a little exercise. Certaldo is where Boccaccio, one of Italy's most famous writers, spent the last years of his life. You'll have time this afternoon for further explorations of San Gimignano. Dinner is on your own this evening. Mileage: your choice; the supported ride is about 28 km (18 miles). Day 5: We continue west today along the ridgeline to Volterra, one of Italy's most famous Etruscan towns. Those who wish can go exploring in the rugged hills of southern Tuscany while the rest of us arrive in Volterra for some sightseeing. You'll want to visit the Etruscan museum and both the Etruscan and Roman ruins on your own this afternoon. Today's Mileage: 32-80 km (20-50 miles). Day 6: It's a great ride to Lucca today, mostly flat after a long down hill. Once in town you might want to ride the 17th-century wall as an introduction to exploring the town. Climb the medieval tower with the trees on top for a great view. Dinner on your own this evening. Mileage: 96 km (58 miles).
We'll leave mid-morning for a ride to Pisa to see the leaning tower. Enjoy lunch or a picnic in Pisa before we pedal back to Lucca. People always enjoy a little extra time to explore Lucca's fascinating medieval streets! We'll celebrate with a final dinner together this evening. Mileage: 52 km (33 miles). Day 8: You are on your own today after breakfast in our hotel. Our tour library is available to you for post-tour planning. How about a day or two lounging in the villages of the Cinque Terre just north of La Spezia? Or a trip back to Florence or on to Rome? Whatever your choice, have a great trip. Perhaps we'll see you in Italy again soon! Total mileage: 312-382 km (195-239 miles).
