9 Days Day 1:
Arrive in Cortona, the setting for Francis Mayes' best seller, Under the Tuscan Sun. Day 2: Descend to the shores of Lake Trasimeno, where stands of bamboo shelter migratory birds and lovely villages surrounded by olive groves. Take a boat to Isola Maggiore where old ladies weave lace and fisherman mend their nets. Today’s destination is a lovely inn in Solomeo or a country house nearby. (54 km/33 mi) Day 3: Enjoy the day's ride into Perugia, the lively capital city of Umbria. Stroll along Corso Vannucci to watch the parade of Umbria's style-makers and style-followers. Visit the Palazzo dei Priori, which houses the Galleria Nazionale di Umbria and its many treasures. (25 km/15 miles) Day 4: Cycle on quiet country roads to Torgiano, home of Umbria’s finest wines, produced by Giorgi Lungarotti. Visit their wine museum, which also includes medieval machinery. Pause at Deruta, famous for its dazzling ceramics. Then head for the wonderful little town of Bevagna, still surrounded by its old walls. (55 km /34 mi) Day 5: Enjoy the day ride into Assisi, bursting with artistic treasures. The Basilica of St. Francis, damaged in the earthquake of 1997, is once more open to visitors. Explore the winding streets of this pink city, then continue on an easy ride to the delightful town of Spello. Enter through a Roman gate and wander through tiny narrow streets lined by medieval and Renaissance buildings. A lovely flat ride takes you back to Bevagna. (51 km/31 mi) Day 6: Cycle to Montefalco, nicknamed “the balcony of Umbria” because of its spectacular views. Don’t miss the dazzling Renaissance frescoes painted by Benozzo Gozzoli in the 15th century in the church of San Francesco. Then ride along riverbanks before arriving in Spoleto, an architectural gem, scene of a world-famous music festival held in late June and early July. (49 km/30 mi) Day 7: Today’s ride takes you into the beautiful, rugged Umbrian hills on narrow winding roads and dirt tracks. Your destination is the hilltop town of Todi. Visit the impressive Piazza del Popolo, designed so that narrow exits at each corner could be closed off and the square defended. (58 km/36 mi)
Follow a winding road high over the Tiber River. Pause to enjoy the views over Lake Corbara before reaching the Etruscan town of Orvieto, perched atop reddish-brown cliffs of soft, volcanic tufa stone. Visit the striking and colourful Duomo, considered the finest cathedral of its period in Italy. (46 km/28 mi) Day 9: Take a last stroll around Orvieto before departing for your next adventure.
