Umbria Unravelled Tour
Tour Duration : 7 Days Day 1:
Sunday, SPOLETO We meet in Spoleto, the epitome of Umbria to Italians. Gothic on Roman on Etruscan, a beautiful walled town climbing up the hillside, built in a jumble on top of its own ruins, and crowned by a forboding fortress…. The Ponte delle Torri, spanning the valley behind the town, is one of our favorite structures. Day 2: Monday, SPOLETO Our riding takes us out into the plain... unless you would rather go up the mountain! Lines of conical cypress trees, olive groves, and quiet lanes with “decent” views decorate a variety of loops designed to cater to those in the worst of jet lag, as to those trying to stretch their legs. Day 3: Tuesday, VALLE UMBRA, ASSISI Hill or valley route? Montefalco is the center of the red wine trade around here: stop on the town square for a tasting. If you would like an extra climb, head for Trevi: houses and palaces emerging from a sea of silver olive trees. Or to Spello, whose unusually linear layout belies Umbria’s purest Roman town. Day 4: Wednesday, VALLE UMBRA, ASSISI Then to Assisi. St. Francis hailed from here, and when he wasn’t busy preaching to birds, he inspired a devotion in humans that remains a marvel. Construction of his basilica (San Francesco -- the name may look familiar) was begun just two years after his death. And, if one church is not enough, there are a good 20 others to gawk at. Or, just sit in a café and debate the merits of the town’s “other” saint, Chiara. By all accounts a good lady, but, frankly, you should be thinking “Red Sox” here. Day 5: Thursday, PERUGIA Our favorite Umbrian town is our destination, but it’s not an easy ride. Head in via the wine museum at Togliano, and the Hypogeum Etruscan cemetery. Your destination is worth the effort -- Perugia is a delight! We have never been to a city that lived more happily in its old stones. And we mean old! This was a city-state six centuries before Christ started stirring up trouble. Wonderful restaurants, beautiful cafés, a draconian traffic management scheme that makes it a nightmare to bring a car into town (you will be amazed at how little this discourages the locals).... And what a jumble! Perugia cascades down the mountain in the most haphazard of ways, and presents itself in all dimensions. One triple-deck intersection (the model for the modern freeway interchange) only permits cars on its top level. Think about what that must look like. And an escalator down to a peripheral parking lot routes you through the medieval street network that served as the foundation of a 16th century fortress, now itself a ruin. Day 6: Friday, PERUGIA Our loop day out of Perugia offers the prettiest biking of the trip. We take a long route through the narrow streets of the city to come out one of the town doors into the lush surrounding countryside. Coast down the mountain in a winding route that carries you past Roman temples, walled hill towns, monasteries, olive farms, vineyards… Then back to town along one or another valley. Long routers can head to Gúbbio, or Lago Trasimene. Evening finds us back in Perugia for a celebratory final banquet.
Saturday, FLORENCE, ROME, TUSCANY... Trip disbands Sunday morning. Frequent trains available to Florence, Rome, or to Brindisi for the overnight boat to Greece. Those joining our Tuscany itinerary catch one at about 10a.
