Veneto Cycling : Self-guided Tour
Tour Duration : 8 Days Day 1:
Arrive in the beautiful city of Padua, home to Italy’s second-oldest university, founded in 1222. Visit the 16th-century anatomy theatre, the world’s oldest surviving medical lecture hall, and the Giotto’s frescoes of the life of Christ in the dazzling Scrovegni Chapel. Day 2: Receive your bicycle and set off for Praglia Monastery, founded in the 11th century. Then follow a narrow valley into the Euganean Hills, remnants of extinct volcanoes covered with woods and vineyards. In Arquà di Petrarca, visit the house of Francesco Petrarco, known in English as Petrach. Arrive at the ancient town of Este. (45 km/28 mi) Day 3: Enjoy an easy ride through peaceful farmland into the Po Delta, known as “the kingdom of the waters”. You’ll see egrets, herons, and curlews as you ride along canals and river banks and cross ancient boat bridges. Today’s destination is a lovely country inn, Ca Cornera. (78 km/49 mi) Day 4: Pedal past picturesque stone houses and along the seashore past bobbing boats and fishing nets extended into the water. Arrive in Chioggia, a miniature Venice, with cobblestone streets and canals, and one of the main fishing ports on the Adriatic.There’s a lively fish market every morning but Monday. Your hotel is on the waterfront near the ferry. (55 km/34 mi) Day 5: Start with a ferry ride to the first of the narrow, sandy islands lying between the lagoon of Venice and the sea. Hop to the Lido, once the haunt of the poets Byron and Shelley, and by the end of the 19th century one of Europe’s most fashionable seaside resorts. Pass palatial hotels and villas, then board the ferry that will take you to Venice. (28 km/17 mi) Day 6: Take a day off from biking to explore Venice. Stroll along canals and through the winding, narrow streets. Relax at a café on the Piazza San Marco, dominated by the magnificent Basilica San Marco and the Doge’s Palace.
Today bike along the Brenta Canal, lined by beautiful villas designed in the 16th Century by Andrea Palladio, one of Italy’s most famous architects to Strà, from where you’ll be transferred to Padua. (26 km/16mi) Day 8: Enjoy a final stroll in Padua before departing for your next adventure.
