Italy Wine Tour - Vinitaly, Veneto, Piedmont

 Day 1:
Meeting in Milano at your Hotel, after lunch.
Transfer to Desenzano. First wine-tasting en route, in the Franciacorta
DOC zone area, west of Brescia.
Arrival in Desenzano on the Garda lake, rest and unpack before dinner
at the hotel or in town, on the lake (Local wines: Bardolinos and Franciacortas).
Day 2:
Full day at Vinitaly accompanied by your professional wine host. Possible
optional half-day driving tour in the area, perhaps northward in the Trento
area with wine-tasting at the Ferrari Spumante winery. Dinner open inside
Vinitaly.
Day 3:
Valpolicella DOC zone tour (option: to remain at the Vinitaly). Visit at the
Tommasi estate, medium-size, then second visit and lunch at the Mazzi estate,
cellars of 1600, water mill and vineyards; food and wine-tasting. Visit to
Padova (St. Antonio cathedral, Palladio building) and back to Desenzano for
dinner.
Day 4:
Second full day at Vinitaly. Or, optional morning sightseeing tour to Mantova
(great salami center and artistic town), back to the hotel after lunch, rest,
then return in evening to Verona and free for dinner in this historic city.
Our guide will be available to help you choose your restaurant and show you
around the city.
Or full day tour to Modena (same thing, also homeland of the tortellini, lambrusco
- there are also good ones - great medieval cathedral and typical restaurants-
1h30' drive)
Day 5:
Last Vinitaly day (probably half-day). Or optional tour to Bologna, "the mother"
of mortadella, lasagne, zampone, and capital of the richer northern Italian
cuisine. Lunch with demonstration of mortadella making. Back to Desenzano.
Dinner at the Bottega del Vino in Verona, "the" place to be during VinItaly!
Day 6:
Transfer to Piedmonte. Stop en route for a tasting and lunch in the Oltrepò
Pavese DOC zone at the Frecciarossa winery, the very best of this region
just south of Milano.
Arrival in our hotel in the Barolo countryside at the Verduno Castle.
Dinner with practical introduction to the Barolo and Nebbiolo wines of
this region.
Day
7:
Wine-tasting tour in the area of Barolo and Barbaresco, Nebbiolo DOC zone.
Visit to wineries of Marchesi di Barolo and Giacosa, plus traditional
shops and craftsmen. Optional walk across the vineyards or even a bike-ride
- there are bikes available in hotels. Open for dinner in Barolo.
Day 8:
Wine-tasting tour in the area of Barolo and Barbaresco, Nebbiolo DOC zone.
Visit to wineries of Ca'Rome and Gagliassi and the un-missable castle of Grinzane
Cavour, which is also the main regional "enoteca". Final wine-tasting dinner
together at the famous restaurant of Brezza, right in the center of Barolo.
Day 9:
Transfer to Alba or Asti for your connecting outward transportation (can be
arranged by Avalon Tours depending on your next destination). Transfers to
Milan airport also available on request.
