Photographing Venice
Photography
Seminar with Jack Hubbard
Course Objective
This photo trip to Venice will combine all the basic fundamentals of photography.
Our premise will be the same as some of the great photographers, from Ansel
Adams to war photographers Larry Burrows and Dirck Halstead: Good photographs
are made in the mind of the photographer and in the camera. Most of the work
is done when pictures are taken, not by manipulating them later on.
With that goal in mind, we will concentrate on composition, shapes, forms,
and understanding the properties of light. Using digital cameras, we will be
able to engage our subjects in a new way, and look at our work in progress.
We will edit in the camera. We will also be printing our daily efforts, and
in some cases, will reshoot some subjects based on improving the initial effort.
Our objective at the end of our week in Venice is to produce an individual
album of this beautiful city that reflects how each of us sees it through the
eye of our camera. Rather than a collection of snapshots, it will be photographic
interpretations of not only how we see our subjects, but their visual and emotional
impact on us.
Photo Seminar Leader: Jack Hubbard
Jack Hubbard has been taking photographs for 40 years. He has worked with many
formats, from large camera 4 x 5 to 35 mm and now digital and video. He has
a strong background in news and news photography, making pictures for United
Press International, Newsweek, and the New York Times. He broke
the story of Senator Ted Kennedy's accident at Chappaquiddick and his pictures
were used worldwide. The photos were also part of a New York Times exhibit
at the Museum of Modern Art in New York displaying what the Times called
"154 of the most important pictures of the 20th century."
Hubbard has had a long career in television as well, working for the CBS
Evening News with Dan Rather, as a founder of southern California's Orange
County NewsChannel, and at Entertainment Tonight, before coming to Stanford
University as associate director of the News Service.
He continues as a television consultant and independent producer, and as a
free-lance photographer. He also shoots and edits video for the daily Stanford
Report Online Web page.

What to Expect
Expert Leadership
Expert leadership is the key to an exciting, unforgettable experience. Our
trips feature gifted leaders for whom leading trips is a true vocation.
Besides showing you wonders you'd never find on your own, they make sure
everything runs smoothly and safely without a hitch. They are knowledgeable
about all aspects of your trip, and take great pleasure in sharing their
insights with you. More than just guides, they positively elevate your experience
by being teachers, companions, and the best of friends. You'll be in good
hands with them every step of the way. Although trip leader assignments
are subject to change, Silvia Giacon is currently schedule
to guide this trip. Silvia is a native Italian who lives in Venice. An architect
by trade, she lived in Canada for many years, and when given the least amount
of time, will find a way to travel. Silvia has led groups through France
and Italy for nearly 20 years. She is enthusiastic about leading our tours
and we are certain you will enjoy her rich knowledge of Italy's culture
and history. You'll be in good hands with her every step of the way.
